The HOW of World Building
By Goden Hwang
Literary arts are not the simple act of reading and writing. It’s an act of storytelling, where students learn to organize their thoughts, question the status quo, and gain insight into experiences that may otherwise remain invisible. Literature trains students to wrestle with complex issues in the world and perspectives that may differ from their own personal views. In this way, literary arts create empathetic global citizens who are empowered to make a difference in the lives of others. Education is often evaluated through standardized metrics; however, exposure to literary arts sets success on a different metric: one that is defined through qualitative aspects, such as one’s character, rather than quantitative metrics.
